Advances in Auditory Attention Research: Processing Complex Auditory Stimuli

When the Ears Interact With the Brain
Barbara Shinn-Cunningham
What we perceive in a complex setting depends on how we focus attention. The ability to attend to one sound and filter out competing sources of noise requires both a robust sensory representation and the ability to direct and control attention through the closely coordinated activity of multiple cortical networks.

Auditory Scene Analysis: An Attention Perspective
Elyse Sussman
Auditory scene analysis facilitates the ability to perceive sound events in the environment, such as when listening to your friend talking in a noisy restaurant. Neural processes must account for the dynamics of such situations. This presentation will outline attention effects on sound perception when there are competing sound sources.

How Aging Affects Speech Understanding in the Presence of Competing Speech
Karen Helfer
This presentation describes research regarding factors that exacerbate or help to mitigate the difficulty older adults experience understanding speech in the presence of competing talkers.
Presentation Video: 2016 Research Symposium
The Development of Hearing Under Complex Listening Conditions
Lori Leibold
This presentation describes the maturation of hearing in complex, multi-source acoustic environments and age-related changes in the ability to selectively attend and speech-in-speech recognition.
Presentation Video: 2016 Research Symposium
Understanding Speech in Complex Acoustic Environments
Gerald Kidd
This presentation focuses on the cocktail party problem and understanding why listeners with sensorineural hearing loss experience great difficulty in solving this problem.

Speech Understanding by Cochlear Implant Patients in Complex Listening Environments
Michael Dorman
This presentation focuses on speech perception outcomes when people with one or two cochlear implants listen in test environment simulations of restaurants and cocktail parties.

Genetic Influences on Reading Disability & Language Impairments
Shelley Smith Reading disability (RD) and language impairment (LI) are often comorbid, suggesting common etiologic factors. To determine regions of genetic overlap, more than 400 single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped in 23 candidate genes in families with RD or SLI. The results demonstrate shared as well as differential genetic influences.Measuring Rehabilitation Outcomes Using Large-Scale Datasets
