Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools (LSHSS) is pleased to announce the selection of Kelly Farquharson, PhD, CCC-SLP, as editor-in-chief of the publication. Dr. Farquharson is an associate professor in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the Florida State University, where she directs the Children’s Literacy and Speech Sound (CLaSS) Lab. Her research has a mission to help children with speech and language impairments achieve classroom success.

Dr. Farquharson’s Background

Dr. Farquharson has published articles in all four ASHA journals; her articles cover speech-language pathology, and her work has hundreds of citations. She got her start with the ASHA journals as an editorial board member (EBM) for the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology (AJSLP) from 2017 to 2018. She also served as an EBM for Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups from 2019 to 2020.

She has worked with LSHSS for more than 4 years, first as an editorial board member from 2019 to 2021 before serving as editor since January 2022. Last year, Dr. Farquharson served as a guest editor for a forum in LSHSS focused on innovations in treating children with speech sound disorders.

Earning her master’s degree in speech-language pathology at The Pennsylvania State University in 2005, Farquharson went on to earn her PhD at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2012. As a former school-based SLP, her research focuses on the cognitive, linguistic, orthographic, and environmental factors that influence how children with speech and language disorders acquire literacy skills. Her work is also heavily influenced by implementation science, with an effort to help school-based SLPs access and use the most up-to-date research within the context of a school-based setting.

Dr. Kelly Farquharson can be reached at kfarquharson@fsu.edu. She welcomes your input and suggestions on how LSHSS can best serve the practice of audiology and speech-language pathology in the schools.
