Frederick (Erick) J. Gallun, PhD, has been selected as the new chair of the ASHA Journals Board. Gallun, who previously served on the board from 2017 to 2020 as the editor-in-chief of the Hearing section of the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research (JSLHR), will lead the board for the next 3 years. He will also continue in his current term as a senior editor for registered reports for JSLHR.
The Journals Board’s charge is to (a) approve editors and editorial board members for the ASHA scholarly journals; (b) monitor the effective functioning of the editors and the editorial boards; (c) assess the evolving needs and opportunities for augmenting the curation, dissemination, and translation of scholarship in the discipline through the journals program; (d) conduct ongoing strategic planning for the program; and (e) make recommendations to the ASHA BOD concerning the mission and scope of each journal and its role in helping ASHA achieve its strategic objectives.
About Dr. Gallun
Erick Gallun received his PhD from the University of California, Berkley, in 2003 before completing postdoctoral research in communication sciences and disorders at Boston University in 2006. His history with the ASHA journals goes back to his first article published in June 2012. Since then, he’s published 19 articles across four ASHA journals, including two published as recently as this year. In late 2016, he was named one of three editors-in-chief for JSLHR, where he served a 4-year term.
Outside of the ASHA journals, Gallun is a faculty member of the Oregon Hearing Research Center and Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University. His research focuses on the impacts of age, hearing loss, and traumatic brain injury on central auditory function. Currently, he’s focused on building tools that are freely available, run on consumer technology, and are able to bring scientific methods into the clinic and the classroom.
