As a school-based audiologist or speech-language pathologist (SLP), you play an integral role in providing children with opportunities to succeed. Two new Special Collections give you easy access to dozens of resources on multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and engaging with teacher unions!
Multi-Tiered System of Supports
Many schools use multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) to help students maximize their achievement, well-being, and engagement. Regardless of your level of familiarity with MTSS, the resources in this collection can help you!
Implementation, the SLP’s Role, and Intervention
The MTSS collection features 25 ASHA Journals articles focused on three main categories; (1) MTSS implementation, (2) the SLP’s role in MTSS, and (3) intervention.
The majority of the articles in this collection focus on MTSS implementation, presenting research on the effectiveness of interventions delivered in the classroom and via telepractice. A number of articles focus on the SLP’s role as part of the MTSS team, highlighting the importance of collaboration. Finally, the remaining articles focus on intervention, sharing evidence-based approaches when working with students.
Additional Resources
The collection also contains a number of articles from The ASHA Leader discussing issues such as funding MTSS and how to discuss MTSS with administrators. We also provide links to additional resources from a number of other organizations specializing in MTSS.
This Special Collection also links to a fact sheet that you can use to discuss the importance of MTSS to student well-being. In addition, you can read a primer on MTSS, find crucial resources, and learn how to use MTSS to identify specific learning disabilities.
Engaging With Teacher Unions and Education Associations
A second new Special Collection highlights resources for engaging with teacher unions and education associations. As a school-based SLP, you have the right to join your local teacher union and work to create change.
Articles from ASHA’s Journals and The ASHA Leader
Featured articles from ASHA’s journals highlight the importance of teacher unions in negotiating for better pay, caseload size, and other beneficial changes. With many SLPs reporting that they have little experience with advocacy, these articles are a great place to start.
Next, a series of articles from The ASHA Leader spotlight stories of SLPs who have participated in teacher unions. You can also read about ASHA’s partnership with the National Education Association (NEA).
Additional Resources
ASHA has published a number of resources on teacher unions, including a guide to help you get started. This collection also includes a link to the recording of a virtual town hall convened by ASHA and NEA on how working with teacher unions can improve working conditions in schools.
