In addition to helping students and adults communicate, as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), you also play an important role advocating for these individuals and helping them plan their future. Now, ASHA has two new Special Collections for school-based practitioners and those who work in health care!
Special Collections combine a curated list of journal articles with other resources from ASHA to offer members the latest on hot topics in the science—all in one place. Learn more about our newest Special Collections below.
Communication Access in Health Services
People with communication difficulties often don’t have access to the information, tools, and accommodations they need. This can create barriers to health care and wellness settings, leading to frustration and poorer health outcomes.
Our latest Special Collection combines peer-reviewed research from ASHA’s journals as well as articles, blog posts, and podcasts from industry experts in The ASHA Leader. Presentations, evidence maps, and more provide you with resources to help the individuals you work with communicate and succeed.
Postsecondary Transition
As a school-based practitioner, you have a unique responsibility to help older students plan for postsecondary transition. Our special collection on this topic contains resources to ensure that students with autism, hearing loss, and other communication disorders are ready for their future in the workplace.
Alongside articles, you can also find policy documents, evidence maps, and other resources that you can use during transition planning. You can also keep up with your ASHA continuing education units (CEUs) while you learn more about the individualized education program (IEP) process through the various ASHA Continuing Education courses highlighted in the collection.
Even More Special Collections for School-Based SLPs
Once you’ve checked out our two newest collections, browse our Special Collections home page, which offers a wide variety of additional resources for you. If you need more resources on advocating for the students you work with, check out our Disability Advocacy collection.
If you’re looking to keep up with an increasingly diverse population, the collection on Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning (CRTL) links to articles, books, webinars, and more. Similarly, you can find resources on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) with our Special Collection on the topic.
About Special Collections
Our next Special Collections are already in the works! Look out for a collection on Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and one on Multilingual Service Delivery—both coming out early next year. Special Collections offer expertly curated resources for all ASHA members, including SLPs, audiologists, academics, and scientists.
Special Collection topics are developed in coordination with our speech-language pathology and audiology teams at ASHA. Stay tuned to the Context blog and the Special Collections home page to see what new and updated collections we’ll be rolling out next!
