The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is actively seeking applications for open positions in their five ASHA journals. We are looking for enthusiastic researchers and scholars who will support ASHA Journals’ collective mission. Our goal is to disseminate research findings, theoretical advances, and clinical knowledge in the discipline of communication sciences and disorders by overseeing and maintaining the editorial direction of the journal.

Roles

Editor-in-Chief

Responsibilities:

  • Assigns submitted manuscripts to editors.
  • Monitors performance and timeliness of editors.
  • Recruits content, including special content collections, forums, and individual articles.
  • Serves a three-year term starting January 1, 2026.

Qualifications:

Individuals appointed to this role must have substantial experience in reviewing and editing manuscripts, in addition to a strong reputation for research. Further, as noted in the Council of Science Editors White Paper on Integrity in Scientific Journal Publications, the Editor-in-Chief is expected to be “skilled in the arts of writing, editing, critical assessment, negotiation, and diplomacy.”

Additional Requirements:

EICs need to be an ASHA member if they are applying for AJA, AJSLP, JSLHR or LSHSS. For Perspectives of the ASHA SIGs, EICs must be an ASHA member and an affiliate of a Special Interest Group.

Editor

Responsibilities:

  • Assigns submitted manuscripts to editorial board members or external reviewers for review
  • Monitors the peer-review process to ensure timeliness, thoroughness, and civility
  • Consults on knowledge translation and content enrichment opportunities
  • Recruits content, including special content collections, forums, and individual articles, with the support of the editor-in-chief
  • Editors serve a three-year term starting January 1, 2026

Qualifications:

  • Editors should demonstrate competence, a history of scholarly publications, and an established reputation in the research specialty (or specialties) to which they are assigned. In addition, editors should have substantial experience in reviewing manuscripts and extensive background in considerations related to the conduct and reporting of research
  • Editors do not need to be an ASHA member or an affiliate of the Special Interest Group (SIG) if they are applying for AJA, AJSLP, JSLHR or LSHSS
  • For Perspectives of the ASHA SIGs, editors must be an ASHA member and an affiliate of the Special Interest Group. In addition to your responsibilities as editor, each SIG Coordinating Committee (CC) anticipates active participation in monthly one-hour CC calls, engaging with the Professional Development Manager (PDM) for half an hour every two months, and attending a yearly two-day SIG planning session.

Editorial Board Member

Responsibilities:

  • Provides structured peer reviews of at least 8 to 10 manuscript submissions and their revisions over the course of 1 year
  • Provides peer reviews in a timely fashion, meeting or exceeding expectations for quality and tone
  • Editorial board members serve a one-year term starting January 1, 2026

Qualifications:

  • Editorial board members should possess a high degree of expertise in their specialty (or specialties), have experience with reviewing manuscripts, and be committed to participating in the process of providing timely, high-quality reviews for the journal on which they serve
  • EBMs do not need to be an ASHA member or an affiliate of the SIG
