In today’s research publishing landscape, authors are faced with many new options and challenges in addition to the typical pressures associated with being a productive researcher. The overall goal remains constant, though: to maximize the visibility, use, and impact of their work. ASHA, in collaboration with Editage, has launched the ASHA Author Services portal to provide authors the tools and assistance they may need in order to achieve that goal.
The tools available in the ASHA Author Services portal aim to help with all major steps of publication, beginning with improving the chance of success in the peer review process. The Rapid Technical Review service offered by Editage provides authors with the opportunity to have knowledgeable experts examine their manuscripts to check for common causes of rejection. Authors are provided with a detailed assessment report that covers all aspects of the manuscript along with recommendations for corrective action. Additionally, authors can purchase editing services, which include grammar checks and the opportunity for a Q&A with an expert editor.
As research designs and data analyses have grown in sophistication, so has the complexity of their visualization. Well-prepared charts, graphs, and other types of images can involve extensive work yet may be some of the most impactful elements of a manuscript. Artwork preparation services from the ASHA Author Services portal will help save valuable time by making sure authors figures and artwork meet the journal’s technical guidelines. Graphics experts will convert the artwork to the correct file formats and specification, then provide revision support for up to 60 days after the initial preparation.
The amount of academic research being published is constantly growing. Consequently, it can be difficult for authors to have their work stand out and get noticed. The ASHA Author Services portal offers an array of research communication services that help address this challenge. Through the use of such services, authors can increase the visibility of their work and help readers derive greater meaning and understanding from it. To address these challenges, the ASHA Author Services portal offers an array of research communication services. Authors can communicate the focal points of their research with plain language summaries, which are 1 minute reads that answer the “why?” and “what?” of their research. Additionally, Editage offers multimedia research communication options, such as infographics and videos, which allow authors to distribute the important details of their research in a digestible and accessible format. These summaries and multimedia assets can provide a perfect companion to a research article when used in conjunction with services such as Kudos, which gives authors a platform to explain their research and connect with social media services, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. As more and more research is published every year, plain-language summaries and translational sites such as Kudos become increasingly important for making sure articles are read and reach the highest impact potential.
Now more than ever, authors who are non-native English speakers are seeking publication in the ASHA Journals, and the ASHA Author Services portal aims to assist these authors as well. In addition to the aforementioned editing service, ASHA has partnered with Editage to provide translation services to non-native English speakers. Translation with editing services from Editage not only assist authors with the translation of six different languages (Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Turkish) to English, but also include a review of grammar, punctuation, language style, clarity, and fluency. These tools are designed to help non-native speakers increase their chances of success in publishing in an English language academic journal.
Authors will also find useful educational resources on the ASHA Author Services Portal. Powered by Editage Insights, these resources provide information on modern publication trends, relevant news and articles, and tips on successful publishing. These industry level resources provide the perfect companion to the more publisher specific resources offered on the ASHA Journals Academy.
