Although the communication sciences and disorders discipline has increasingly emphasized individualized and person-centered approaches, most of the existing evidence on stuttering is based largely on studies with predominantly male participants, resulting in limited understanding of women who stutter. Yet growing evidence from multidisciplinary fields indicates that gender can meaningfully influence how stuttering is experienced and perceived.
This special issue focuses on women who stutter across cultures—and on the research that can enhance understanding, diagnosis, and treatment for this population. The goal of this special issue is to (1) provide a platform upon which to highlight and disseminate scientific and clinical work on women who stutter worldwide and (2) promote their representation in research, clinical practice, and advocacy.
The following article types will be considered: Research Articles, Research Notes, Review Articles, Clinical Focus Papers, Tutorials, Technical Reports, Viewpoints, Commentaries, Letters to the Editor, and Introductions or Epilogues.
We welcome a wide range of submissions that explore, for example, the following themes:
- personal and sociocultural experiences—including lived communication experiences of women who stutter across cultural and linguistic contexts—as well as advocacy, leadership, and narrative accounts that bring visibility to women’s voices globally
- conceptual frameworks (such as intersectional or gender-informed approaches to understanding stuttering) and neurodiversity-affirming perspectives on communication, fluency, and participation
- clinical and service delivery practices—including culturally responsive assessment and intervention, issues of access and inclusion, and models of service provision in diverse international contexts.
Consistent with the mission of Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups, we seek to publish original, important, and innovative work that advances understanding and practice in the field of stuttering through global and evidence-based perspectives. Authors are encouraged to contact the editor (r_an2@fhsu.edu) if they have questions or would like to discuss potential submissions.
