This collection for the Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research (JSLHR) seeks to encourage research that offers insights into the interaction between language variation and dysarthria. For this collection, language variation is broadly defined to include various dialects (e.g., regional, ethnic, social), foreign accents, and cross-language differences. Despite the increasing social concerns regarding health disparities, equity, and global migration and the general awareness of linguistic diversity in the field of speech-language pathology, language variation is often not considered as a factor in dysarthria research and clinical practice. We aim to build this collection into a platform that will (1) explore and demonstrate the role of language variation in the manifestation of dysarthria, (2) consider language variation in clinical assessment and management, and (3) promote awareness of diverse language backgrounds of people with dysarthria.
The following article types will be considered: Research Article, Research Note, Review Article, Tutorial, and Commentary. We welcome a wide range of submissions that, for example, examine the effects of dialectal phonetic variations on dysarthria, share clinical tutorials for bilingual speakers with dysarthria, or provide commentary on issues regarding linguistic diversity in people with dysarthria. Consistent with the mission of JSLHR, we seek to publish original, important, and innovative studies based on quantitative, qualitative, laboratory, clinical, or other empirical methods. Authors are encouraged to contact the Editor (ykim19@fsu.edu) if they have questions or would like to discuss potential submissions.
Submission deadline: Manuscripts should be submitted by August 1, 2023 (revised) to be considered as part of this collection. A letter of intent to submit (sent to the Editor at ykim19@fsu.edu by July 1, 2023) would be useful for planning the review stage, but is not required for manuscript submission.
Submission Instructions: To submit to JSLHR, go to http://www.editorialmanager.com/JSLHR. Under the “Section/Category” section, you will be asked to indicate that this manuscript is a candidate for a special issue or forum by selecting “Speech— Native language Forum” from the drop-down list provided.
